WHY CORRUGATED CARDBOARD IS A POPULAR
PACKAGING MATERIAL?
PROVIDES PROTECTION
It is fascinating how such a thin-looking corrugated carton can provide a stable cushion to items even during long-distance transportation, handling and shipping. Sturdy items can be moved safely in a single wrap while things as fragile as glass etc can be moved safely by simply adding a couple of layers to enhance thickness. In addition, it also protects items from moisture exposure.
EXTREMELY CUSTOMIZABLE
Corrugated cardboards are extremely customizable. Not only can their thickness be adjusted to make it a perfect fit for any item but it can also be customized to become flame resistant and waterproof. It comes in various sizes and can be very easily folded into different shapes to cater to any industry. In addition, there are various printing options for this packaging material.
COST-EFFECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE
Corrugated cardboard is among the most cost-efficient packaging materials. Apart from that, it is reusable and made out of sustainable materials.

Flutes come in several common sizes or profiles:
- A-flute was the original flute profile for corrugated board. It has about 33 flutes per foot.
- B-flute was then developed for canned goods. It has about 47 flutes per foot.
- C-flute was next developed as an all-purpose flute and it has about 39 flutes per foot.
- E-flute was the next successful flute profile and it has about 90 flutes per foot.
- F-flute was developed for small folding carton-type boxes. It has about 125 flutes per foot.
In addition to these five most common profiles, new flute profile – both larger and smaller than those listed here – have been created for more specialized boards. Generally, larger flute profiles deliver greater vertical compression strength and cushioning. Smaller flute profiles provide enhanced structural and graphic capabilites for primary (retail) packaging. There is also a good deal of variance in the range of flute sizes based upon the container characteristics that are desired for each application.
Different flute profiles can be combined in one piece of combined board. For instance, in a triplewall board, one layer of medium might be A-flute while the other two layers may be C-flute. Mixing flute profiles in this way allows designers to manipulate the compression strength, cushioning strength and the total thickness of the combined board.
In doublewall or triplewall, varied flute profiles provide advantages over flutes of the same size that are perfectly aligned.
The following illustrations demonstrate four types of combined board.
Singlewall: The corrugated medium is glued between two sheets of linerboard. Also known as Doubleface.
EDGE CRUSH TEST
1) Tests to determine compliance with the edge crush requirements of Table B must be conducted in accordance with Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Offical Test Method T-811.
2) A minimum of six tests must be made and only one test is permitted to fall below the specified minimum value, and that one test cannot fall below the specified minimum value by more than 10 percent. Board failing to pass the foregoing will be accepted if in a retest.
